Frequently Asked Questions

Do I even need an EV fast charger?

Just about all EVs come with a cable that allows you to charge from a normal 10 Amp socket at home. This is a pretty slow way of charging your EV, typically only adding 16km of range to your EV per hour. For many people this will not charge your EV quickly enough, and they will need to consider a higher capacity charger. One other factor often overlooked is that a fast charger will allow you to charge your car faster during periods when electricity may be cheaper. For instances, a leading electricity supplier now offers free electricity between midday and 2pm, and cheaply (8c/kWh) between midnight and 6am. If you can charge just within those timeframes, you stand to save a lot of money. The standard 10 Amp charger will most likely not be able to charge your car in time within those timeframes, but a fast charger likely will.

Where should my EV charger be installed?

Your EV charger should be installed wherever you park your car at home. Ideally, this will be in your garage. Proximity to your power distribution board is also a factor to consider.

How fast will the charger be able to charge my car?

It depends on the vehicle and charger, but a 7kW charger will typically add 50km of range per hour of charging.

Do I need 3 phase power?

No. A home with a single phase power supply can charge an EV at 7kW. Should you have a 3 phase power supply, you may be able to run a 3 phase charger at 22kW. Best speak to us about your options here. We may be able to upgrade your supply to 3 phase if this is important to you.

Do I need to have solar installed to have an EV charger?

No. Even if you have solar at home, unless your car is there during the day your EV won't get much benefit from you having solar installed at home. There is a leading electricity company who offers discount electricity (of 8c kWh) from midnight to 6am. This means you could do an 80% charge on your EV for around $4 (without solar). However, if you do have a large solar system at home, and your car is often there during the day, then you could potentially charge your car for free for several hours during the day.

Does having a battery installed at home help charge my EV?

Not really. Typical home batteries have a capacity of around 14kWh. Most EV batteries have a capacity greater than 50kWh. This means that your home battery isn't really capable of adding much charge to your EV battery.
